The students of Carleton Engineering participate in competitions locally, provincially and nationally. Some competitions regularly attended are:
- Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC)
- Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR)
- Concordia Bridge Building Competition
- Formula SAE (FSAE)
- Great Moonbuggy Race
Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC)
The OEC is a very broad competition taking place in February with six different categories. Entrepreneurial Design - where teams must design and “market” a new product. Corporate Design - where teams must try to solve a current problem facing Canadian Engineers. Editorial Communications - teams present on socioeconomic impact of current technology. Explanatory Communications - teams must explain a sophisticated system to a layman audience. Parliamentary Debate - you show up and improvise a debate under a given topic. Team design - teams are given a set of resources and must complete a design challenge.

Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR)
GNCTR is an amazing event that allows students from all streams to participate in the competition. The challenge is to build a sled with a running surface made solely of concrete. It must have a roll cage, braking system, and weigh under 300 pounds. The teams are picked VERY early in the year so don’t miss out. Carleton has a track record for doing well so join the team and keep our name on the map.

Concordia Bridge Building Competition
The annual Troitsky Bridge Building Competition is held at Concordia University in Montreal. The purpose is to design simple bridges made out of dental floss, popsicle sticks, and white glue. Designs are judges based on aesthetics, originality, presentation, and ultimate strength. Despite what you’d think, bridges have been known to hold well over 5000 lbs of force so get a team and come out to the competition.

Formula SAE (FSAE)
The project involves development of an open-wheeled racing car within the specifications set forth by the North American Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE). It consists of three major stages, namely design, construction and performance testing of the vehicle, leading to an annual competition organized by the SAE in Romeo, Michigan during the month of May. At this competition, the car is compared to entries from more than 100 other universities and is judged on performance, safety, comfort, marketability and cost.
